“Sozopol 1” is devoted to one of the Bulgarian coast's best-loved images: Old Sozopol and its houses overlooking the sea.
A traditional wooden house raised on massive stone foundations occupies the centre. Its architecture carries the spirit of the old town, while the sea beside it creates Sozopol's distinctive union of history and coastal landscape.
Nikolay Dobrev uses dense, assured brushwork to give wood and stone character and material presence. The open water introduces space and air.
Soft blue-grey marine tones interact with the natural earth colours of timber and stone in a calm, harmonious palette. The sea does not compete with the architecture; its breadth emphasises the silhouette of the house and suggests openness, fresh air and light.
At 68 × 48 cm framed, the painting has an elegant horizontal presence. Its restrained colours suit both classical and contemporary interiors.
