“Jay” – Anna Tikhonova-Yordanova | Watercolour

“Jay” is a watercolour by Anna Tikhonova-Yordanova that captures the bird in a brief and lively moment – as though it has paused for just an instant before continuing on its way.

There is movement in the image, even when the bird is still.

The free watercolour brushwork preserves the lightness of the scene. The colour does not enclose the forms within strict outlines, but allows individual shades to flow into one another and leaves air around the image.

Brown and grey tones create the natural softness of the plumage, while the characteristic blue accents give the jay its vivid presence.

The bird is captured in a natural pose, without excessive decoration. It looks alive, curious and ready to disappear from view at any moment.

The small fruit in its beak adds a detail that turns the portrait into a story. We no longer see simply a bird, but a particular moment in its life.

Nature is often most interesting in just such small moments – when it allows us to observe it for a few seconds before continuing on its way again.

The light space around the figure emphasises the delicacy of the watercolour and allows the image to be the natural centre of the composition.

Measuring 15 × 20 cm, the work has a small and intimate format. With the frame, its dimensions reach 22 × 27 cm.

“Jay” is a work about the beauty of nature in its most ordinary moments – those brief encounters that last seconds, but remain in the memory far longer.
