“Duel” is a graphic artwork by Yulian Yordanov, in which a man and a bull face each other in a tense clash between physical strength and human will.
Two opponents. One has strength. The other – the resolve to remain standing.
The powerful figure of the bull dominates the composition. Its presence conveys primal energy, danger and a sense of strength that is difficult to control.
Facing it, the man appears vulnerable. The difference between their bodies is obvious, but this is precisely what makes the encounter so tense – physical superiority is on one side, while the will not to retreat remains on the other.
There is no safe distance between them. The two figures are placed at the very heart of the conflict, and the composition holds that critical moment in which the next movement could decide everything.
The precise drawing and rich graphic texture of the etching heighten the drama. The lines and hatching model the bodies and emphasise the contrast between the weight of the bull and the human figure facing it.
But “Duel” also invites a broader reading. The encounter can be seen as a clash between the human and instinct, between reason and primal strength, between fear and the decision not to retreat.
Here, courage does not mean the absence of fear. It begins precisely where the danger is clear and the person nevertheless stands their ground.
The square format of 29 × 29 cm concentrates the tension and encloses the two figures in a space from which there seems to be no easy escape.
“Duel” is a work about the critical moment when strength meets will – and we do not yet know which of the two will prevail.
