“Winter Mischief” is a colourful, cheerful work by Kiril Bozhkilov in which a snow-covered village is brimming with life. Children play and sledge, people meet in the streets, and curious faces look out of windows.
The sledges hurtle down the slopes, games begin, and the cold clearly matters little when there is so much snow around.
Life is not limited to children’s adventures. People meet, talk and carry out daily tasks. Between them appear the small playful exchanges Bozhkilov enjoys weaving into his compositions.
People also peer from windows. Some take part, while others prefer the comfortable position of observers: close enough not to miss anything interesting.
The whole village becomes a large painted theatre with no single central character. Life itself is the protagonist, noisy, colourful and scattered across dozens of little incidents.
The eye can travel through the composition for a long time. Behind one figure is another; one incident leads to the next, and small details gradually reveal the painting’s nature.
The work is not exhausted by a first glance. Each return may uncover another amusing story.
White snow forms a backdrop for the colourful figures. Bright accents stand out against it, making the winter landscape feel lively and warm.
The artist’s playful stylisation gives the characters immediacy and individuality. Their small gestures and poses often suggest a complete story.
The humour remains natural and kindly. Bozhkilov observes human weaknesses, curiosity and comic situations with a smile.
Perhaps that is why winter does not feel cold here. There is so much movement, human closeness and vitality that the dominant impression is warmth.
Oil on hardboard allows the artist to build rich, substantial colour, while the 44 × 50 cm format gives room to the many figures and narrative threads.
With its frame, the work measures 54 × 60 cm. Its substantial presence allows the busy composition to be viewed both at a distance and close up.
“Winter Mischief” recalls winter days remembered not for the cold but for their stories: sledges, laughter, snow and the people with whom they were shared.

Snow has one serious purpose: mischief
The sledges are already flying, the children have forgotten the cold, adults supposedly attend to their own business, and observers at the windows watch who is doing what. Good snow is far too precious to waste on staying indoors.
