“Totem” combines archaic symbolism, the human figure and surreal imagination in a composition resembling a visual code from an almost forgotten world.
Mystical signs, totemic structures, architectural fragments and graceful female silhouettes appear to belong to different times and spaces, yet connect within a single narrative.
The totem acts as a bearer of symbol and memory. Rather than offering a literal interpretation, Yulian Yordanov creates an independent system in which ancient signs interact with the body and fantastic architecture.
Soft human curves contrast with stricter, almost ritual structures, generating the work's surreal tension. A precise network of etched lines builds textures, volume and light and shade down to the smallest detail. Deep shadows intensify the sense of mystery while lighter areas gradually draw individual images from the complex whole.
The work demands close viewing. Its atmosphere makes the first impact, then individual signs, figures and relationships begin to emerge. At 25 × 33 cm framed, it has a compact but powerful presence.
