“Summer Love” is a sunny, playful work by Kiril Bozhkilov in which the romance of two lovers meets the inexhaustible curiosity of an entire village.
It is high summer. The wheat is ripe, the sun heats the earth, and an old tree offers a cool refuge from the day’s heat.
There, two lovers have found a world of their own. Work, harvest, neighbours and clocks seem to cease to matter for a moment.
The village, however, has other plans. Curious faces peer from behind the sheaves and from different corners. One person has apparently passed by by chance, another has happened to stop, and a third probably already has something to tell the neighbours.
The contrast between the lovers’ private moment and the amused curiosity surrounding them makes the composition into a small visual narrative.
Bozhkilov’s playful stylisation creates characters who need no words. Their poses, gestures and glances are enough to explain the scene.
Golden wheat gives the painting warmth and a sense of mature summer. The tree’s greenery offers coolness, while the small human figures enliven the landscape.
Romance never becomes overly sentimental. The artist looks at it with kindly folk humour: love may be a private matter, but village secrets clearly have a short life.
Behind the comic situation remains genuine tenderness. The lovers have found a moment of closeness within a world that continues to bustle around them.
The work also conveys the familiar community of Bozhkilov’s paintings, where people work, love, wonder and joke together.
Oil on hardboard gives the colours richness and vitality and brings out the many small narrative details.
The 18 × 24 cm format offers space for the scene while retaining the intimate quality of the artist’s small works. Its framed dimensions are 26 × 32 cm.
“Summer Love” is about love, summer and the impossibility of going unnoticed when everyone around you knows one another: a warm, cheerful and very human story.
