“Dahlia” – Stanka Atanasova | Watercolour

“Dahlia” is an elegant and painterly watercolour by Stanka Atanasova, in which the beauty of the flower is recreated through a rich palette, airiness and expressive contrast.

At the centre of the composition, a luxuriant dahlia unfolds, its numerous petals gradually opening outwards from the heart of the flower. The bloom fills the space and naturally draws the eye.

The artist renders the dahlia in a warm pink-coral palette. The colours shift from more saturated tones to light, transparent passages, giving the petals a sense of softness and volume.

The contrast with the deep emerald-green background is particularly striking. Dark green tones bring the luminous flower forward and evoke a cool, natural setting filled with vegetation.

The watercolour technique allows the individual tones to flow freely into one another. The transparency of the paint preserves the light within the image and gives the composition the distinctive lightness of watercolour.

Despite the abundance of petals, the work never feels crowded. Stanka Atanasova achieves a beautiful balance between the detail of the flower and the freedom of the painterly background.

The square format enhances the sense of harmony. The flower is naturally concentrated at the centre of the composition, while the green space around it allows it to unfold visually.

Measuring 30 × 30 cm with the frame, “Dahlia” is a compact work with a clearly defined chromatic presence. It can serve as a beautiful standalone accent or form part of a composition with other botanical watercolours.

Its pink-coral and emerald-green tones allow it to fit easily into both a bright contemporary interior and a space featuring natural wood and warmer colours.

“Dahlia” carries the immediate charm of a flower in bloom—fresh, abundant and beautiful, captured at a fleeting moment of its flowering.
